How Does the Custom Jewelry Design Process Work?

Commissioning a piece of custom jewelry is one of the most personal and rewarding experiences in fine jewelry. Whether you're designing a one-of-a-kind engagement ring, reimagining an heirloom, or creating a piece that tells your story, the process is more accessible than most people expect. Here's exactly how it works at The Perfect Setting.

Step 1: The Initial Consultation

Every custom piece begins with a conversation. During your consultation, we'll talk about your vision — the style, the occasion, your budget, and any stones or materials you have in mind. This is also where we discuss whether you're starting from scratch or working with existing stones or jewelry you'd like to redesign.

Consultations can happen in person or virtually, making it easy to work with clients anywhere in the country.

Step 2: Design & Concept Development

Once we understand your vision, our designer creates detailed sketches and CAD file, computer generated renderings of your piece. You'll see exactly what your jewelry will look like before a single metal is cast. This is your opportunity to refine proportions, adjust details, and make sure every element feels right.

Step 3: Stone Selection

If your design includes diamonds or gemstones, we'll source options that meet your specifications — cut, carat, color, clarity, and certification. For clients interested in lab grown diamonds, we offer ethically sourced stones with the same optical and physical properties as mined diamonds, often at a significantly lower price point.

Step 4: Fabrication

Once the design is approved and stones are selected, fabrication begins. Every piece at The Perfect Setting is handcrafted in our studio. Depending on complexity, this stage typically takes two to six weeks.

Step 5: Quality Review & Delivery

Before your piece leaves our studio, it goes through a thorough quality review — checking every prong, every setting, and every finish. Your finished jewelry is then carefully packaged and delivered to you, ready to wear.
